As Dr Anne and Lois research the history of Eastern Europe from the Soviet Occupation back to the Holy Roman Empire with all its complexity, Dr Anne has been reading an Officer and a Spy set in France at the end of the 19th Century. This is the second Robert Harris that she has read and enjoyed. The fictional story was built around the true story of a convicted spy Alfred Dreyfus, his exile and subsequent pardon. The mindset of the French army personnel who refused to admit they wrongly convicted Dreyfus reminded Dr Anne of the mindset of the Nazi party in the extermination of the Jews and subsequently the Soviet mindset against the academics and creatives.
Dr Anne awards 7/10.
